Records Management in Microsoft Purview: Building the Foundation for AI Governance

Artificial Intelligence is changing how organizations create, use, and govern information. Microsoft 365 Copilot, AI assistants, and emerging autonomous agents can now generate content, analyze information, and support business processes. But while AI may assist, recommend, or act, accountability must remain with people and organizations.

For records managers, this creates a practical challenge: the final business record may no longer tell the whole story. AI can introduce supporting evidence such as prompts, responses, AI-generated content, agent activity, audit trails, approvals, and governance records. Some of this evidence may sit outside familiar recordkeeping locations, making preservation, discovery, retention, and disposition more complex.
